EV4U Custom Conversions
United States
Приєднався 4 бер 2010
Our goal is to help you convert from internal combustion to electric. By teaching you how to design and build a safe, simple, reliable, and economical conversion. However, UA-cam videos are only the tip of the iceberg.
From a customer: "If you're looking for information about a Do-It-Yourself EV conversion, look no further. Richard and EV4U have what you need to succeed. After purchasing an EV kit from another supplier, I was very disappointed by the lack of information and support. Hoping to fill the gaps in my knowledge, I turned to EV4U's Online EV Workshop. Bottom line, EV4U gave me the information I needed to make good choices about converting my vehicle. They provided not only general electrical education, but "how to" demonstrations and the information I needed to personalize my installation. I couldn't have completed my project as quickly, or professionally, without their help. EV4U’s Online EV Workshop was worth every penny!"

Do you guys run a workshops or courses for DIYers who are not in the auto business?
All of our Workshops are designed for everyone, and not just the auto business.
Great explanaton ! Ever 👍
Thanks! 😃
Great video, how much would you say this could cost to be professionally done?
No idea, a lot of materials and man hours.
@@ev4u figured..thanks anyways
4 months start to finish on that sounds like you got it done fairly quickly. It's too bad the build quality of the new trailers is not good the prices I've seen were not cheap they should be able to produce a good quality product for the prices they charge. I hope everything works well for you guys. It might be a good idea to find a good used frame and build a box on it and start with that. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Wasn’t the reason the VW engineers used a nylon bushing was to not transfer the noise from the transaxle/engine into the cab. The same reason had they put rubber bushings on the shifter rod transaxle connector . Wouldn’t using a bronze bushing defeat that.
Never seemed to be an issue. Please not that the bronze bushing was replaced with a Delrin bushing about four years ago. Thank you for watching.
I gather this amazing ride has no hvac of any kind for the occupants ?
You are correct, thank you for watching.
I’m just gathering thoughts at this stage. Are there pros and cons about taking an existing setup eg motor, controller, battery from a Nissan leaf for a conversion, vs buying new kit parts?
One day I’d like to convert my ‘74 Vw bus, but can’t afford it right now. Would a motor from a Nissan leaf (2014) have enough power to drive the bus? I’m guessing it’s similar weights so could be ok.
Check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/Hy4u1oMziO4/v-deo.html
Yes, thank you for watching.
Great series. It’s feeding my brain so I can start thinking about sensible questions.
Any batteries for sale?

@@ev4u Your welcome I love the idea of upcycling old cars and you guys are making it happen.
Ive been tuning in to this channel since 2013 and followed this bugs developments. I think you guys are super generous 👏👏👏 congratulations
Thank you for watching and being a subscriber. We appreciate you.
Great video! I always don't believe in EV oem designer, who drop out the gearbox. Next step is put the gear box into EV to increase 3-4 time the range of the EVs
That's a nice looking car, color and all. The old bugs are neat looking and I really don't care about the year as long as they look like the old ones. It's street legal without the bumpers? I would like to convert my truck if I can make it do what I want it to do.
The Bug has been driven since 2008 without bumpers, and without issue. I'm sure if I were to get pulled over it would be to talk about the car and not the lack of bumpers. Thanks for watching.
Screaming deal, is there room to relocate and restore a backseat? Would love something the family could cruise in
Yes, you could simply locate the battery pack where we normally place it in customer's cars. Check out one of our many videos featuring a Beetle. Thanks for watching.
I noticed you were shifting gears, does EV motor feel same as gas motor when you shift? Beautiful car and conversion.
Not sure what you mean by "feel the same". The electric motor has a lot more torque so you would typically shift at a lower RPM than you would with a gas engine. The electric motor is quiet so all you hear is the transaxle. We don't use first gear, we take off in second gear. The reason for shifting gears is for efficiency and fun. Don't know if you noticed, but the car accelerates faster than the GPS on the dash cam can keep up with, and that was not driving aggressively. The power through the gears is different as the electric motor develops horsepower at a lower RPM due to the maximum torque at zero RPM. Maximum torque and horsepower of the motor in this vehicle is at 4,800 RPM. Thank you for watching.
@@ev4u You answered my question, my understanding was that people kept electric conversions in one gear, so I learned something, shifting gears can be fun with electrics also. An electric Kharman Ghia is a VW car I wish I could afford. Respect to you.
Being that by law, a vehicle must make a sound while in motion, do the noises from the motor, tire tread and transmission (plus whatever else I might be leaving out) all typically prove sufficient enough on your conversions?
Yes - Thank you for watching and being a subscriber.
can we use engine break on this like the gas engine on a 300 meter downhill?
Regenerative braking is available on AC conversions.
Have you had the opportunity to try any of the axial flux motors like the one in the Mercedes EV made by Yasa or any of the others? Thanks
No I have not.
It is noisy but you don't have to try to sleep with the noise just the sound of the crickets, hopefully not. That's really cool and looks like it works great.
It has been working well. Very quick for lift bed. With everything else in place, the winch noise is not bad.
Would it be better if you put 1/16" thick or thicker of neoprene or some tough rubber over the ABS sheet?
That is definitely an option.
27:56 5 hours @ 1,200 Watts = 6,000 watt-hours, not 6,000 Watts, easy to overlook when standing and talking! :)
There are a couple of spots where I miss speak, but that's how it goes when your old and not using a script. Thanks for watching. How about subscribing?
Is it possible to make an EV that charges while running / driving around? Seems like it should work in theory somehow but im a beginner and havent heard of this feature in vehicle.
Sort of, but at a cost. Thanks for watching.
Very cool! Nice work, very very good!!😊
Thank you for your kind words and for being a subscriber.

what did you use to make the "cart"?
Purchased it on the internet.
❤❤❤❤ Thanks
Maybe I missed it, but it looks like you measured from the original engine block to get the magic number for how far off to set the flywheel. But there was a space between the block and bell housing. Wouldn’t one need to measure from the spacer to get the correct number?
Make every effort to keep your back vertically straight as you work. Bending forward over your work will put unnecessary strain on lumbar and sacral structures. Try bending at the knees instead. Basic martial arts stances are even better (retired therapist & van dweller)
Beautiful
So glad I found this channel! Love this stuff!
Thank you for watching and for your nice comments.
@@ev4u I did have a question for you: how can you tell how many gears and what ratio of gears you need to run better? Is it more gears is better always? Or maybe with EVs you need less gears and can ramp up to faster ratios or something? Also.. i know very little about transmissions. Do you just hop clean over car trans to use a beefy truck transti handle the extra torque? How do i go about matching a motor to a trans for a project. Im sure it has to be a strong one but the beefier you go the more weight youre adding probably. How do you not overshoot the target and pick the right trans?
Please address questions to: info@EV4Unow.com Thank you.
The idea of having electric cars is intriguing and absolutely the way I want to go with my classic vw but dollar for dollar it’s just not the best option
I have been driving my electric Bug for fifteen years and it is a blast to drive, plus not valves to adjust or oil changes. Just turn the key and go. To me that makes it even more fun.
@20:00 I tape my plastic threads if there is not a pex cone washer in the female fitting. no leaks.
As you will see in our next video, that is how we rectified the problem. Thank you for watching and your comment.
Does anyone know the name of the electric window kit? I have it in my Jeep but im not finding a brand name etc. and my passenger window isnt working however i need parts. thank you!!!
There is no caption available for these wonderful videos. There for I am not able to benefit fully. I just rely on body language and black board, Since I am deaf.
Our newer videos offer captions/subtitles but the order videos do not. Thank you watching.
Love the info and appreciate the idea.....buuuut. Started looking into converting as an option for a commuter car and thought that DIY would be a way to save some money. Here's where the but comes in, 18K for the kit!!!? Then add on a vehicle to put it in!!! For something decent that's not a rust bucket you're looking at another 8-10K Then all the labor to make it happen. Affordable should not be a work use in this context, sorry.
Nice project! I'm curious to see how it ends and especially to see how it's done. Good work.
Thank you for watching and being a subscriber.
looking forward to following this project!
